Links

In alphabetical order, to show no favouritism. These are just sites that I think are worth a click.

  • 8Bit Joystick – A self-proclaimed “e-zine for nerds”, which frequently updates with rants and reviews of various products and services that are likely to be of interest to anyone who’d come here.
  • Boing Boing – “A directory of wonderful things” pretty much sums it up. Random links to random things around the Interweb that people submit and are deemed worthy of your interest.
  • Cabel’s Blog – Cabel of Panic Inc runs a fun blog which is worth a look at for his DS Lite video reviews alone.
  • Command-Tab – An assortment of Mac news and Mac hacks, some cool, some cool despite being largely pointless.
  • Edge Online – The online home of the best games magazine in existence. The site has occasional news but also has features clipped from the magazine. The ‘Time Extend’ ones are must-reads.
  • The Escapist – As pretentious as I find the whole “New Games Journalism” movement, The Escapist is a fairly tolerable example of it. It’s a magazine…only not, because it’s online. Even if you don’t like reading it the magazine layout is enough to justify the visit.
  • Eurogamer – One of several good euro-centric gaming news sites. They’re pretty timely with their news and have a nice, witty and idiosyncratic writing style. Not to mention they run the indispensible GamesIndustry.biz.
  • GameFAQs – One of the most indispensible gaming resources on the Internet. Never buy a guide again because this site contains all the same stuff and more, often to an even better standard. Maps, walkthroughs, menu translations, saves, codes, forums for almost every game. Responsible for robbing many a gamer of their patience with difficult puzzles. Check out my contributions.
  • GameSpot – One of the big two gaming sites. A bit more corporate than IGN but they have some excellent video content and their premium service is a paragon that IGN should take notes from.
  • Gaming Horizon – A site that I write for, mainly with news and previews. Decent site, and it’s been the first in my feed reader to break stories a couple of times.
  • Gaming Steve – Home of what is in my opinion the best gaming podcast. The site is a good read as well, but definitely try out the podcast.
  • IGN – One of the most popular gaming news sites on the Internet, mainly because I’m an occasional contributor. They have a tendancy to overrate in their reviews sometimes but they still have an active community and some good editors who aren’t afraid to have some fun.
  • IGN Boards – IGN’s huge forums with an absolutely immense community – mostly whining miscreants – making up the second-biggest community on the Internet. Well over 100 million posts, over 2,000 boards, and chances are you’ll find someone talking about your area of gaming or entertainment interest. Look for me while you’re there – I’m a moderator whose name you’ll never guess.
  • My Boring Ass Life – Writer/director Kevin Smith’s blog isn’t as frequently updated as it used to be (maybe after Clerks 2?), but it makes for compelling reading. Check out the Jason Mewes story, ‘Me and My Shadow.’
  • NTSC-uk – For the hardcore UK gamer who’s into the import scene this site is a must-bookmark. It’s frequently updated with reviews of the latest imports (and PAL releases in the unlikely event of an early UK release) and features on the scene in general, has some essential guides to understanding the issues of importing like TV standards. They also have one of the best communities that I’ve seen going on in their forums.
  • Penny Arcade – Web comics are a growing clique which Penny Arcade can take a huge credit in making fashionable. Along with their three new comics a week and massive archive, PA has branched out to create a gaming charity that helps children’s hospitals, an annual expo, a slew of merchandise, and more. Great site.
  • Play Asia – My preferred source for Japanese or Asian games. Plus they can be dirt cheap – where else can you buy new 360 games cheaper than a new Xbox game would be in a UK store?
  • Pro-G – Another site that I write for. This one’s based in the UK and is well worth a look, with good reviews and previews and constant news.
  • Runtime 360 – Blog and project page of one of the readers around here, most famous for co-founding the excellent XBMC and now working on Transcode 360.
  • Tronix – My preferred source for US games, more specifically the moving of them into this country. Exceptional service and good prices, and no weird bilingual Canadian covers since they’re in New York.
  • UK Resistance – A long-running and hilarious gaming site that has always been very pro-Sega, and will therefore take a pop at Sony and/or Shadow The Hedgehog whenever possible.
  • VG Cats – Another gaming webcomic that isn’t as famous as Penny Arcade, but not justifiably so. It’s frequently laugh-out-loud hilarious.
  • Video Game Centre – Belonging to a friend of mine, the VGC is one of the UK’s longest-running independent games retailers. Specialising in imports and all kinds of little gaming curiosities and specialist items, they’re a good bet if you’re looking for something rare.
  • Video Games Plus – A Canadian games retailer specialising in sales to Europe. Get your American games from them dirt cheap (around ?30 including shipping for a new release) with great service and no import duty for most items. Highly recommended.
